Himalayas: A Soundtrack to Silence, Snow, and Survival

In the early 2000s, while at the University of Wisconsin, I discovered music production through discounted student access to Sonic Foundry’s tools like Acid Pro and SoundForge. What started as casual tinkering with loops quickly became a creative obsession. Without formal training, I dove in—layering sounds, shaping rhythms, and creating music by instinct. I wasn’t chasing perfection—just emotion.

There are places on Earth that feel almost otherworldly. The Himalayas are one of them. Towering peaks, ancient glaciers, and a silence so deep it echoes within you. That’s the feeling I tried to capture in a track I composed years ago, simply titled Himalayas.

It wasn’t just about sound—it was about evoking a landscape. An emotional space. When I think of the Himalayas, I don’t see just snow and stone. I see an ice desert, quiet and immense, where survival itself feels sacred. A place where time slows, where the air is thin and clear, and the mind goes still.

That’s the image that guided me. I wanted the music to feel vast and cold, yet alive. Each beat, each tone had to breathe that frozen beauty. There’s no rush in this track—only stillness, tension, and release. The echo of wind across cliffs. The pulse of footsteps in the snow. The occasional shimmer of light through clouds.

To me, Himalayas became more than a song. It became a visual meditation. A sonic portrait of a place I’ve never physically stood in, but have often visited in my mind.

What I love most is that even now, years later, when I listen to it, I still feel that same chill in my chest. That same reverence. As if I’m standing at the foot of something much greater than myself.

And maybe that’s the best kind of art—the kind that takes you somewhere else.
